Chinese Grammar is a concept that has been borrowed from Western languages, and in certain senses, Chinese grammar does not exist. The greatest truths are often the simplest, and this holds true for Chinese grammar as well. Simply put, Chinese grammar involves the construction of character sequences, similar to the way LEGO bricks are assembled. I refer to this approach as my “LEGOO Mandarin” method. However, in a more complex sense, Chinese grammar can be quite challenging. In this course, I will present the simplest truths in my own way, and by following my guidance, you will be able to quickly master Chinese grammar and also learn some reading skills that will prove useful in future exams.

Understanding the basic sentence structure in Chinese is crucial for learning the language. Unlike English, Chinese sentences do not require the use of auxiliary verbs and are typically composed of subject, predicate, and object in that order. The subject usually comes at the beginning of the sentence, followed by the predicate and then the object. For example, “我喜欢中国菜” (wǒ xǐ huān zhōng guó cài) translates to “I like Chinese food” with the subject being “我” (wǒ) meaning “I,” the predicate being “喜欢” (xǐ huān) meaning “like,” and the object being “中国菜” (zhōng guó cài) meaning “Chinese food.” Keep in mind that this is just the basic structure and there can be variations and exceptions depending on the sentence and context.
